For those who have attended our Te Reo Introduction 1 course. Continue learning Te Reo and Te Ao Māori. Please contact the office if you are new to our programme. 80% attendance required. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Discuss our responsibilities as a bi-cultural nation under ‘Te Tiriti o Waitangi’

  • Identify underlying Māori values in the tiriti such as: whanaungatanga, pepehā and tikanga

  • Discuss the significance of whakapapa as a fundamental Māori world view and confidently describe your family and relationships through this lens

  • Form simple sentences to describe parts of your face and body

  • Discuss protocol on the marae

  • Recognise the importance and use of karakia and be able to recite one correctly

  • Recognise the cultural values inherent within different whakataukī (proverbs) and kīwaha (idioms) and be able to correctly recite one of each 

What to bring to class: pen and exercise book, Māori dictionary.

Our Te Reo pathway

  2. Te Reo Māori Introduction 2 - for those who have successfully completed our first introductory course

  3. Te Reo Māori Introduction 3 - for those who have successfully completed our first two courses

You are welcome to repeat any level to consolidate learning before progressing to the next level.

Eligibility for Course Fee Subsidy

This course offers a course fee subsidy through funding from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for NZ citizen and permanent migrant adults, their partners on work visas or visitor visas, and refugees. To qualify, registrants should be over the age of 16 years and not currently enrolled in a secondary school. We need to collect extra information such as age, ethnicity, educational achievement and gender for statistical purposes. You must also provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency or refugee status if requested. A condition of accepting a course fee subsidy is that you commit to at least 80% attendance of your course. The subsidised course fee is $60.

Zoom courses

Most courses are held face-to-face.  Occasionally, zoom courses are offered and these will be identified on the course page. Requirements for zoom courses: We recommend a device with a larger screen (i.e. not a phone), a microphone and a camera. Course materials will be emailed to you a few days before the course. You may wish to have these printed if you have access to only one screen.  We do not provide printed resources or course books for zoom classes.

Zoom course etiquette:

  • your session should display your name for attendance marking (not a nom-de-plume or nickname)

  • please allow your tutor to see your face during the class

  • do not allow others to sit in on the sessions

  • do not record sessions or you may infringe the privacy of others on the course.

Prerequisites

To enrol in this course, you will have successfully completed (with strong attendance) Te Reo Māori Introduction (Level 1) at Selwyn Community Education.  If you have not attended a first level Te Reo course at Selwyn Community Education, or your attendance was patchy, please contact the office and will arrange an enrolment interview with our tutor to ascertain the best course for you to join.
