Discover the beauty and symbolism of Korean botanical art in this unique four-week course inspired by Hwajodo (Flower and Bird) paintings.
Traditionally used as decorative screens, these artworks feature flowers, birds, and insects—each carrying symbolic meaning, such as prosperity, harmony, or fertility. In this course, you’ll draw on these rich cultural themes while creating your own expressive pieces using modern watercolour materials.
Rather than focusing on traditional techniques, this course emphasises subject matter, storytelling, and personal interpretation.
You will explore:
Korean botanical motifs and their symbolic meanings
Composition inspired by traditional Hwajodo artworks
Expressive painting using contemporary materials
Developing your own creative interpretation of cultural themes
Please note:
This course is recommended for those with some prior watercolour experience. As this is a short 4-week course, the first session will include planning and research. Participants may be encouraged to bring printed reference images (flowers, birds, etc.), or complete some light preparation beforehand.
Participants should bring their own watercolour materials. The tutor is happy to provide guidance on suitable supplies.
Price: TBC
Tutor: Danbee Park
