NEW! Beginner Figurative Painting

$150.00

Beginner Figurative Painting is part of our Painting & Drawing classes, held at Parnell Community Centre in Auckland.

Join multidisciplinary artist Naomi Azoulay for a 7-week exploration of Figurative Painting.

This course is designed for absolute beginners who want to learn figurative painting in a clear, supportive environment.

Figurative painting is art that clearly derives from real, recognizable objects—often the human form—retaining strong, identifiable references to the real world.

You will be introduced to fundamental skills including drawing for painting, proportion, light and shadow, colour mixing, and brush handling. Techniques are demonstrated step-by-step, making realistic painting approachable and enjoyable even for those with no prior experience.

Working on a stretched canvas, you will develop a figurative painting from start to finish while learning practical methods Naomi uses in her own studio practice to simplify the process and overcome common beginner challenges.

The course places equal emphasis on building confidence and developing technical skills, with demonstrations, individual guidance, and time to practice. Classes take place in a welcoming and relaxed environment where questions are encouraged, and everyone progresses at their own pace.

Students to bring their own painting kit, list supplied. Canvas can be bought from tutor.

  • Wednesdays, 6-8pm

  • Start date: 29 April

  • Course length: 7 weeks

  • Tutor: Naomi Azoulay

  • What to bring:

    • Pencil, paper, and any images, paper to use

    • selection of brushes and acrylic paints, rag and jar with lid.
